Zine Cover Assignment

I am finally done with my third assignment in graphic design 1. These are two possible covers for a zine that I will be producing in later assignments. I plan on having my magazine focus on computers in the field of animation. In particular, the history of animation and what computers brought to the medium. Or it might be about computer animated material I have produced. I am not sure yet, as I do not have enough high quality animations to fill a magazine, but we shall see.

For these two covers, one was photo based and the other was a more abstract design that I created in illustrator. I believe that my abstract design is much better than my photo based designs. For the abstract design, I was trying to give a techie feel with the repeating patterns of triangles and the little circuit design at the bottom. I am very proud of this design, as it took a lot of different attempts to get to it and the final idea.

The photo based one does not quite feel like a magazine cover to me. It almost strikes me as a text book cover. However, it still gives the feeling that it focuses on computers so it can work for my magazine cover. I used two images of the internals of my computer, as I attempted to get an image of the motherboard where there are a lot of circuit lines are writing on the board.

  1. Hi Jacob! I like that you chose a topic that interests you for this assignment! I think it's also a topic not many people would think to choose. I think you did a great job with the color palettes in both versions. I do think that if you changed the color of the text in the second version to a green similar to the first one it would help get rid of the textbook feel it has. And maybe change how the photos would combine into one large one if printed? That seems like a common theme textbooks have. The way you have the type laid out in the first version is also a lot more appealing. I like how you put certain details inside the circuits and the font reminds me of computers. The second version's text seems a bit more cramped since you gave yourself such little marginal room with the picture. I think both of these versions could easily fit in as a computer magazine in a store. The second one might be more clear to people doing a quick glance if you swap the motherboard picture to the cover. Great job overall though!

  2. Jacob,

I think you did a really nice job with this assignment overall! I am drawn to certain aspects out of both of your sets. For example, I like the mint green against the navy blue and the computer design details included in the first set; however, I feel that it is lacking a little bit and could improve from the addition of an image or two. Likewise, I enjoy the photos you added to the second set. I agree with Taylor's suggestion about having an image that connects if you are going to position them perfectly aligned like that. I feel that the second set's cover could be improved if you reduced the image size a tad, moved the type over top of the image, and added some of the cool computer design details from the first set. You had really great ideas, I just think your work would be strengthened if you combined them a little! Your use of grid seems apparent to me and your type has a clear sense of hierarchy. Good job!

  3. Hi Jacob! I think that your covers are really strong and capture the tone and feel of what you were going for in terms of this magazine cover. I really like the tech vibe you created with the type of font you chose and colors you used. That lime greenish color and dark blue I think is usually associated with computers and tech things in tv/movies and books so it was a strong choice to use them as the viewer would also be connected to that. Both covers are legible and nice on the eyes. They look professional and I could see them being on a magazine rack somewhere and fitting in. I especially like the decision not not to center both of the images on the second cover and have them in the corner. As for what needs improvement, I would say maybe centering the text in the box at the bottom of issue one because it seems a little too far over and takes away from the balance of the magazine.

The Art of Game Design: Chapters 6 and 7

The Art of Game Design  continues to be an intriguing read that surprises me in new ways with each chapter. Chapter 6 focuses on the importance that theme has on games and how theme should be treated in a game's design. Theme isn't just something that the player learns from the game, it is the thought or idea that the game should try to represent in every possible way it can. This chapter covers two forms of themes, experienced and resonant themes. Experienced themes are just that, the themes that are experienced by the player through the game's story and setting, however resonant themes are a bit different. Resonant themes are the ones that are below the surface and aren't really experienced but have some deep truth that parallels those truths that the player holds. These are the themes that resonate deeply with players and make a story truly meaningful to a player's core.      To people who do not really play video games, they can be easily seen as a...

Magazine Columns - Backbone of Every Good Layout Response

There are many aspects that must be considered when designing a magazine. The content is very important, but one aspect of the design that no one really thinks about is the layout of the magazine. The grid is how images and text are placed around the page. It can determine the size of objects and how much white space is between each element on the page.  Most text in magazines appears to be set out into 3 columns. However, one of the most common layouts utilizes 12 columns in order to appear to have 3 columns. This gives much more layout control over what is shown and how it is shown. Its very surprising that a 12 column layout results in 3 columns of main text. However, the goal of this is so that it is modular. In computer science, one of the most important things that you consider when coding is to try and make your code modular. When you can use the same layout on every page, it means that it is dynamic and interesting since each page will feel like it follows the same rules. T...

The Art of Game Design: Chapter 8 and 9

Chapter 8 in the book The Art of Game Design  is all about the actual production process that is followed after brainstorming is complete and a team has an idea for what game they will be developing. One of the topics that this chapter focuses on are the ideas of software development, waterfall and a more circular idea designed by Barry Boehm. As a computer science major, I have encountered both of these ideas through my time in college and in the busniss world. Both theories have their positives and negatives, but the idea of "waterfall development" is a much stricter way of approaching software development when compared to Boehm's approach.     With a waterfall approach, this does not leave any room to go back and revisit the original idea and add or remove core features. This approach was used in the development of many old forms of windows, which also coincided with how the software was sold. For example, Microsoft's windows operating systems. Win...
